Same song, second verse

Have I mentioned Silas is claiming lots of "firsts" for our family? Earlier this year he caused our first urgent care visit and first emergency room visit when he had RSV. Apparently that wasn't enough for him because this week he claimed our family's first ambulance ride and ICU stay. I knew boys were supposed to be more trouble but, sheesh, this trouble is getting expensive!

I could tell Silas's cold was starting to cause him a little respiratory distress on Monday and took him into our regular doctors office fully expecting for them to suction him out real good and fix him right up. He seemed to me exactly like he had been several months ago when he had RSV but since he is older now, I figured he would kick the breathing trouble pretty easily with a little help. When they were checking him out they found that his blood oxygen was in the low nineties. After several breathing treatments without improvement they decided to go ahead and admit him to the hospital and, since they wanted him to stay on oxygen, that meant taking an ambulance. The Children's Mercy transport team came and picked us up. They were so awesome. I felt comfortable right away sending Silas with them. He was the saddest little sight strapped on the big stretcher they brought.

He tested positive for Rhino-intero virus at the hospital (which is basically just a cold) and they said we just have to wait it out. Since then he has been on varying degrees of oxygen and a little baby scale c-pap machine here in the pediatric ICU. The first 24 hours or so was really rough. He cried most of the time, and had a really hard time sleeping at all. It was so hard to even look at him because, even though he is just laying in my arms, he was breathing like he was running sprints. I can't imagine how exhausting that would be.  Just watching made me anxious and exhausted for him. Thursday night into wednesday he seemed to start feeling better and sleeping better but not breathing better. Today (Thursday) they were able to take him off of the oxygen and breathing machine and he is breathing fast but keeping his oxygen up on his own. If he keeps this up, we can leave the ICU today and hopefully go home soon.

Before all this craziness, we had a super fun visit with Jeff and Courtney. I wish we could see them more!

It is so stinking hard to get a good picture of Sarah and Leah together but I love these matching dresses so I had to try.

This picture doesn't exactly fit with the post but I love it and couldn't leave it out. Naomi is the best little helper. I don't know what I'd do without her.

  3. So thankful that little guy is doing better. How scary for you! No mama should ever have to see their child strapped to a gurney...
